Removable dentures are used to replace missing teeth. In some cases all teeth have to be replaced, these are normally made using acrylic (plastic). In some circumstances a chrome metal can be used.
Removable dentures can also be used when only some teeth are missing, partial denture, these dentures can be made out of acrylic and chrome. When making a partial denture using chrome material can make them less bulky in the mouth making them easier to wear.
On your first visit. The dentist will do a check up on your mouth even if full dentures are required, the linings of the mouth, tongue, gums are all given a full health check. The dentist will then tell you about the options available, with what materials will be used to make the denture, these will be chosen to benefit you the most.
The dentist will then take some initial impressions, this is done using a putty-like material, this takes the marking of your gums, this impression is used to make another impression tray, of which will be used to get a better impression of your mouth, at the 2nd visit this is called a special tray impression.
On your second visit. The dentist will used wax rims to register the biting position, and the special tray impression is taken.
On your third visit. A trial denture made out of wax is made and tried into your mouth, for size and adjustments are easily made. If at this stage you and the dentist are happy with the appearance and the biting positions the dentures are sent back to the lab to be finished.
The dentures are then fit and checked. A follow up appointment is normally made to check that the patient is happy and the dentures are conformable and no sore spots have started, it is quite normal for patients to sometimes have to come back a couple of times to get the dentures altered.
All of these stages are normally made with a week in-between each appointment so you need to give yourself a good month to six weeks for dentures to be made.
